Kidney Disease

Flax plays a beneficial therapeutic role in kidney disease, which often involves destructive inflammatory, oxidative and sclerotic processes. The two most common causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. Another cause is lupus, a syndrome that results from severeal related autoimmune processes.

In a 1995 study, 9 patients with lupus nephritis ate flax everyday starting with 15g or 2 tbsp of flax a day for 4 weeks. Eight weeks into the study, flax consumption was increased to 30g or 4 tbsp a day for another 4 weeks. By the 12th week, these patients ate 45g or 6 tbsp of flax a day. Flax showed to benefit kidney function and inflammation, which helped to retard the development of lupus nephritis. (Clark, W., et.al. 1995. Flaxseed: A potential treatment for lupus nephritis. Kidney Int. 48:475-480.)
